Urban Academy School at Robson Manor,1935 —Heritage Interior Rehabilitation and Conversion to Private School

Modern Institutional & Universal Access
Royal City Builders Awards

This grand four-storey mansion, built by Dominion Construction for notable New Westminster sawmill owner J. M. Robson, had been a popular wedding and catering venue since the 1950s.  Urban Academy bought the building for a private school of 150 students.  Rehabilitation involved Building Code upgrades (fire protection sprinklers, enhanced fire separations and a new exit stair), new washrooms, an entry ramp for Universal Access and various classroom, office and science lab improvements.  A second phase project added more classrooms in new dormers in the high attic floor.

Throughout the project the Character-Defining Elements of the Art Deco interior and the building exterior were respected with minimal intervention and alteration.
